This is a quick post to recommend you one of the best films I have seen this year, if not the best, MUSTANG by Turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven. Who is a major talent to watch and an inspiring, highly intelligent woman . The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film and it won the César Award in France for Best Film -Its a French production – as well as a Goya award in Spain for Best European Film.I think it is important for us women to see this film because if we believe in sisterhood and women’s rights, then we can’t turn a blind eye to what many young girls and women go through in other parts of the world where basic rights we give for granted, are alien to them.
Now the film blew me away, this happens rarely, last time it happened I was at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes watching Leviathan . Thankfully, it has happened again!. Mustang tells the story of five young sisters who live in a big comfortable home “a thousand kilometres from Istanbul” but a million kilometres away from women’s rights. The house ends up being like a prison they need to escape from. Their parents are dead and they are raised by their traditional and repressed grandmother and a tyrannical uncle for whom women are born to obey men and do as they are told. But while the subject matter is raw and unfortunately real for some women, the film is uplifting, warm and full of “joie de vivre”. Its out on general release in the UK and if you want to do something this bank holiday weekend that you won’t regret, that one thing is ; GO AND WATCH MUSTANG!
Here is an interview with the talented director , Deniz Gamze Ergüven, you go girl !
