I haven’t watched the Harry and Meghan Netflix series, I’m not keen in spending hours of my life binge watching what I already heard in the Oprah interview.
That said, I hear them and celebrate their courage to walk away from a role they didn’t feel comfortable doing and calling out the institutional racism at one of the oldest institutions in the world.
The Harry and Meghan Netflix series have received a lot of criticism since it launched, as expected majority of the criticism has come from the U.K but also some media in the U.S. The media mainly arguing their story is one sided. Even supporters of the couple such as Gayle King said their comments on the series were “dicey”.
As for the rest of Europe, people are generally not interested considering the financial crisis many face and an ongoing war in Ukraine.
However, the hate and insults directed mainly at Meghan Markle since the series launched, have only highlighted the fact that her truth may well be the actual truth.
Jeremy Clarkson, a wealthy, sexist and obnoxious British journalist, wrote a now infamous, vile and horrific column in Britain most popular newspaper, The Sun. His hate target, Meghan Markle.
In the column, headlined “One day, Harold the glove puppet will tell the truth about A Woman Talking B*****ks”he openly admits he loathes Meghan “on a cellular level” and added that he dreams “of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her”.
I have never read anything as vile as that, not even by nasty trolls trying to intimidate people online. Surprisingly, this hate preacher calls himself a “small voice of calm and reason”.
The fact that an editor approved this is baffling. His comments are inciting to the abuse of a woman who has been open about how she wanted to end her own life. What the arrogant broadcaster wrote is not freedom of speech but abusive, aggressive, hateful and criminal speech that incites violence.
The media personality has in the past conducted himself in a manner that has been hurtful to others. A few years ago he drove through Argentina while filming his TV show Top Gear in a Porsche with the number plate H982 FKL, this was seen by locals as poking fun at the 1982 Malvinas (Falklands) war where many believe a war crime was committed by the British. The ageing Argentine cruiser the General Belgrano, was sunk by a British submarine and 323 sailors died when Margaret Thatcher ordered the sinking of a vessel that was outside the exclusion zone.
As expected, Jeremy Clarkson comments about Meghan Markle, received a huge backlash. Possibly encouraged by his media agent, fearing he may get cancelled, he wrote a bizarre Tweet where the word “I’m sorry” was nowhere to be seen.
Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future, he wrote.
After almost a month of silence, he has now clarified he actually wrote to Harry and Meghan to personally apologise for what he wrote in the column. However, they didn’t accept his apology. Why would they?
Harry and Meghan’s spokesman said: “On December 25, 2022, Mr Clarkson wrote solely to Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex. The contents of his correspondence were marked Private and Confidential.
“While a new public apology has been issued today by Mr Clarkson, what remains to be addressed is his long standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories, and misogyny.
“Unless each of his other pieces were also written “in a hurry”, as he states, it is clear that this is not an isolated incident shared in haste, but rather a series of articles shared in hate.”
Jeremy Clarkson is no damsel in distress, he knew very well what he was writing, same as he knew very well what he was doing when driving the Porche with the insulting number plate laughing at dead Argentina soldiers. He is a fully capable adult with working intellectual capabilities.
The dead soldiers couldn’t defend themselves against this joker who had the full support of the BBC at the time. However, Meghan and Harry are rich, famous and quite influential so he was forced to backdown. Not because he wanted to, but because of his ITV and Prime Video deals. Unbelievable they keep this guy on tv but that’s another story.
Hate speech is hate speech, even if you later try to spin it. Sorry is not enough. Do the right thing and disappear into obscurity where you and your hate belong, Mr Clarkson.
