This is an interview with Tracy Barry, the owner of The Landing boutique hotel in Harbour Island, The Bahamas. I interviewed Tracy a few years ago when I visited the island to direct a short film as part of the 14 Islands Film Challenge. I was one of the 14 finalist filmmakers invited to the Bahamas for two weeks to create a film. The film I created is titled The Girl on Holiday. Thanks to my local host, Rosita Roberts, I had the opportunity to meet and interview locals like Tracy and others. Their insights into the island and how it has changed over the years are now part of a documentary I’m currently editing.
Harbour Island is renowned for its stunning pink sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Located in the northern part of the Bahamas, it is known for its charming colonial architecture and vibrant local culture. The island’s relaxed atmosphere and friendly residents make it a popular destination for visitors seeking both beauty and tranquility.
The Landing, is a boutique hotel that perfectly encapsulates the island’s laid-back elegance. With its beautifully designed rooms and exceptional service, The Landing offers guests a taste of Harbour Island’s unique charm. The hotel’s proximity to the beach and its emphasis on personalized guest experiences have made it a favorite among travelers.
Tracy, being a young woman, doesn’t feature in the documentary, as I decided to focus on the stories of older locals, all over 70 years old, who were born and raised in Harbour Island. However, I decided to create a separate video for Tracy’s interview. This island is charming and beautiful, but without a doubt, the best thing about it is the friendly locals who make you feel like a part of their lives from the moment you arrive—at least, that’s how I felt.
